"Miss Margarida’s Way" with "Crazy Colours" and surtitling by ATLAS E.P.
The Theatrical Group of Deaf "Crazy Colors" present the play “Miss Margarida’s Way” by Roberto Athayde from Sunday, February 1st for 19 performances, every Friday at 21:00 and every Sunday at 19:00 and ATLAS E.P. complements this project with CAPS Surtitles in every performance for equal access to the content.
About the performance
A Tragicomedy Monologue for an Impetuous Woman which along with the coexistence of Deaf and hearing actors uncovers the central heroine’s multiple facets, an austere, disturbed teacher. The novel continues to be timeless, since it discusses power abuse and studies the teacher-student dynamic, imposing questions about the educational role of the teacher and the boundaries of power in the classroom.
The simultaneous participation of Deaf and hearing actors utilises physical theatre, the Greek Sign Language and vocal acting. The provision of Surtitles (in Greek) secures equal access to the auditory channel of communication. The coexistence of the multiple linguistic elements combined with the multiple theatrical techniques come together organically on stage while the accessibility methods are integrated into the acting landscape, creating a different dimension. The performance is an artistic work that addresses Deaf and hearing spectators.
“Miss Margarida’s Way” is a deeply political work of international dramaturgy and was presented for the first time in Brazil in 1973 under a dictatorial regime. At first, it was banned and later it was severely censored. It has been presented in more than 30 countries. In Greece it premiered in 1975, directed by Michalis Kakogiannis, with Eli Labeti starring in the titular role.
About Crazy Colors
The Theatrical Group of Deaf "Crazy Colors" was formed in 2009 and is a partnership of Deaf and hearing actors. Through a regular involvement with theatre, the Group has showcased new codes in acting expression, utilising sign language with a fresh pair of eyes, along with vocal acting, the principles of improvisation and the techniques of physical theatre. In 2023, the Group was awarded an Honorary Commendation for their work by the Hellenic Association of Theatre and Performing Arts Critics at the Theatre and Performing Arts Awards. Throughout their career, the Group has had the honour of collaborating with important cultural institutions. Indicatively, the Greek National Operα, the National Archaeological Museum, the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, Ancient Olympia, the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Roumeli, the National Theatre of Northern Greece, the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, the Theatre of Thessaly, the Federation of the Deaf of Greece, the Association of Deaf, the French Institute of Athens, the Italian Cultural Institute of Greece, etc.
