The "Nutcracker" with audio description and tactile tour at Olympia Theatre

ATLAS E.P. proudly shares Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker" in ballet in an accessible version including audio description and an interactive tactile tour. For more than a century, the "Nutcracker" has been linked to Christmas bringing a sense of enthusiasm to audiences regardless of age.

This year’s new production by Olympia Theatre aims at highlighting the timeless charm of a work bringing together imagination, spectacle and emotion with the participation of the Municipality of Athens Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of Constantinos Diminakis. The performance was choreographed and directed by Christiana Stefanou and costumes were designed by Giuliana Bottino.

The ballet was performed for the first time on December 18th 1892, at the Mariinsky Imperial Theatre in Saint Petersburg, libretto by Marious Petipa and choreography by Lev Ivanov. The story was based on the novel “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” by E.T.A. Hoffmann, that inspired Tchaikovsky to compose his third and last ballet, following “The Swan Lake” and “The Sleeping Beauty”. From the shiny “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” to the impressive “Waltz of the Flowers”, the “Nutcracker” has been now one of the most recognizable and well-loved masterpieces of the international repertoire. 

With great respect to tradition but also approaching the story with a fresh, modern view the new production aspires to touch the souls of the audience, whether young or not. Affirming, thus, why the work was and still is one most beloved and timeless masterpieces in the international repertoire.
