ATLAS E.P. meets for the second time, the extraordinary Aris Biniaris. After a very successful collaboration regarding accessibility on “Faust”, where accessible performances left their own mark, we are honoured to accompany the unique play “The Trial”, by Franz Kafka, one of the most emblematic novels of the 20th century, in Ark Theatre.
The performance will be provided with a Tactile Tour, an Audio Description, Surtitling for equal access and Greek Sign Language Interpreting.
Information about the performance
Josef K. was arrested one morning on his bed, wearing his pyjamas, for an unspecified crime. Despite his arrest, he’s left free to go about his business. The Court is there simply to observe his reactions. Throughout the play, Josef K. tries in vain to understand the crime he was accused for, progressively realizing that each and every person that he come across is, in reality, part of this Court; this mysterious organisation which is always on his trail, annihilating every notion of privacy and tranquility. A Court “pulled by guilt” and, at the same time, gifted with instilling in the accused the art of self-incrimination. “In the end, where there was nothing to be found, suddenly a sublime guilt comes forth”, realizes Josef K. at some point.
In this novel, Kafka with his wry humour, shows the human’s effort to comprehend a society which crushes, like a wild machine, human freedom. In a world where a “crime” is not always defined and the laws seem arbitrary and vague, life seems to be a constant and agonizing joke, while justice and truth die out. At the centre of this absurd universe, Josef K. is trapped in a process with no begging and no end, in trial with no visible accusation.
Kafka, the “shrewd prophet of destruction of the western human world” as called by George Steiner, outlines in his novel the complex paths of guilt and that of unreachable justice as well as the mechanisms of every type of totalitarianism. At a time when freedom becomes more and more obscure and institutions often work within a framework of complete lack of transparency, the “Trial” meets the present day in a disarming way.
Odysseas Papaspiliopoulos portrays Josef K, surrounded by Evita Agaitsi, Alexis Vidalakis, Angeliki Delithanasis, Thanasis Isidorou, Vasilis Kazis, Konstantinos Maglaras, Clearchos Papageorgiou, Sotiris Tsakomidis, Nikolas Hatzivasiliadis and Eirini Katsinoula in a dynamic performance bearing the directorial stamp of Aris Biniaris.
