ATLAS E.P.'s team is honoured to meet once again the legendary director Savvas Stroumpos and the team of “Ground Zero”.

On a white background, the title and performance information are on the right. On the left, a deer with its eyes covered by a black frame. Two colored stripes run diagonally across it. One is burgundy and the other is blue. In these stripes, the deer’s reflection is that of a woman. Blood is streaming from her eyes.
Poster of the performance

Our first encounter with the team and the director, which occurred back in 2019 with the play “Antigone” together with the Disabled Artists Movement, was one of those encounters that filled us with hope for the possibility of the implementation of the universal accessibility model that we have brought, developed and applied together in Greece since 2014. It is with pleasure that today we meet a team that has been trained in ancient tragedy in a unique way. Physically, energetically and ritually. The world renowned “Theodoros Terzopoulos Technique” which highlights liberation, remembrance and physical resilience, and is taught in Greece as well as on an international level, through permanent organisations, academies and intensive workshops, has also been taught and implemented by Savvas Stroumpos since 2003. Watching a performance of such an approach would truly be a gift.

So, it is with joy and honour that we render the performance “Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides” accessible on the 30th of September, providing Greek Sign Language Interpreting, Surtitling for equal access purposes and Audio Description. A tactile tour will take place an hour before the performance.

We are expecting you to the last accessible performance of this year’s Athens’ City Kolonos Festival, with universal accessibility services by ATLAS E.P.

Following is a video narrating Iphigenia’s story in Greek Sign Language:

Narration Text in GSL:

A few days before the performance of “Iphigenia in Aulis” at the Kolonos Festival, we would like to say a few things about the story.

Have you ever read about the Trojan War? It is one of the most famous wars of Ancient Greek mythology. The war took place between Troy and Sparta. Troy was an ancient city in Asia Minor, in today’s northwest Turkey. The war started when Paris, son of the king of Troy, “stole” Helen, Menelaus’ wife, who was the king of Sparta. To take her back, the Greeks united their powers for a military campaign against Troy with Agamemnon, Menelaus’ brother, as their leader. The war between the Greeks and the Trojans, according to the legend, lasted for ten years and ended with Troy’s total destruction.

“Iphigenia in Aulis” takes place just before the Trojan War starts. The Greek army and fleet have gathered in Aulis, an area in Boeotia, in the coastline of Euboean Gulf. The men are ready to leave for Troy, but there is no wind for the ships to sail. Seer Calchas states that for the weather to change, the leader of the Greeks, Agamemnon, has to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, to the goddess Artemis. Agamemnon brings his daughter to Aulis on the pretence that she will marry Achilles. When the truth is uncovered, Iphigenia, her mother, Clytaimnistra, Achilles and Agamemnon himself face a hard choice: to save Iphigenia, which will lead to cancellation of the war, or to sacrifice her so that the Greeks restore their honour?
