What happens when two completely different worlds have to co-exist?

“Koutsoupies”, ERT1’s new comedy show, which will air daily at 19:00, takes us to a small mountain village that refuses to get erased from the map.

“Koutsoupies” premiere on ERT1 on Monday October 5th at 19:00. The show will air on ERT1 with optional SDH subtitles by ATLAS E.P. and will be available on ERTFLIX right after the broadcasting with optional SDH as well.

ATLAS E.P. presents all episodes’ accessibility identity on subtitling for equal access purposes.

A few words about the story (from ERT’s website):

The story idea belongs to Ntina Kassou, while Andreas Dedalos and Nikolas Stravopodis are responsible for the screenplay and Vicky Manoli for the show’s directing. We will see the adventures of the locals that refuse to see their village getting erased from the map and have decided to take matters into their own hands.

When “Koutsoupies” are on the verge of total devastation, a bold initiative will turn the world upside down: an announcement calls people living in Athens to come and stay in the village, in exchange for a free house and the chance to start over. Only this is not as easy as it sounds. The newcomers’ arrival divides the villagers, causing conflicts, unforeseen alliances, loves and countless comic situations. Some villagers see the newcomers from the city as their sole opportunity to make Koutsoupies lively again, while other villagers think of them as unwanted intruders who have come to threaten their traditions and their way of living.

And just like that, the newcomers have to deal with not only blatant hostile behaviours, but also a community that thinks that it is their right to have a say in their lives. Interventions in family affairs, pressure to give birth to more children, fortified coffees with questionable herbs, serenades under the windows and unwanted matchmakings, are some of the elements that synthesise an everyday life where nothing happens the way it is expected.

ACCESSIBILITY IDENTITY

ATLAS E.P.’s SDH subtitles follow the rules of the Greek Subtitling Guide for Accessibility Purposes. Therefore, each character has its own colour, which they retain as long as it is allowed by their interactions with other characters of the same colour. When this happens, their second colour is used. In addition, the soundscape of the series is represented by using the # symbol to introduce new music and (brackets) in order to describe how the music is further built as well as important sounds.

Characters’ key (the colour squares inform the audience of each characters’ typical colour in the subtitles):

Vlassis Terzopoulos (Thanasis Kourlabas) - white

Vlassis is the new president of Koutsoupies, husband to Rina and brother to Kanela. He has set his mind to resurrecting the village and bringing as many constructions, people and subsidisations as possible. He firmly believes that the way to the European Parliament is through Koutsoupies’ square. He stubbornly refuses to accept the fact that he acts as the mouthpiece for Pyrgodespoina!

Rina Koutrouba (Dimitra Stogianni) - cyan

Koutsoupies’ former president, current wife to Vlassis. She lost the presidency by one vote, but that’s something that she has never accepted since she is sure that Pyrgodespoina is behind her defeat. She is a quarreller, suspicious, but she has a heart of gold and great instincts too! She wants to uncover the plan of the Ritsos’ family and regain control of Koutsoupies.

Pyrgodespoina Ritsou (Maria Katsandri) - yellow

Despoina Ritsou is the last aristocrat of the Tower and lives there with her nephew, Aristos. She commands Koutsoupies from afar, without ever getting her hands dirty. Her whole life is devoted to protecting her wealth, her name and the Ritsos’ power… Since some secrets can never leave the Tower!

Aristos Bakolas (Thanasis Patriarcheas) - green

The rude great landowner of the Tower! Pyrgodespoina’s nephew is in charge of the fields, the workers and the livestock just as easily as he swears. He scares others before they have the chance to get scared. He is engaged to Kanela but he has absolutely no intention of marrying her!

Kanela Terzopoulou (Iliana Karapasia) - yellow

Koutsoupies’ doctor, Vlassis’ sister and fiance of Aristos, at least that’s how she insists on introducing herself! But Kanela’s wish doesn’t take into account Pyrgodespoina’s will, who will fight greatly against letting that marriage happen. Kanela finished Nursing School just before getting deleted for taking ages to finish school and she went back to the village with a degree, a stethoscope and a confidence matching the one of a Medicine professor. She is a public danger, because her diagnoses are so careless but so believable that even she ends up believing.

Zisis Mantouvalas (Victoras Petsas) - white

A good son, a good husband and Aristos’ tireless worker. He’s always caught in the middle: on the one side is his mother, Foto, on the other side, there is his wife, Vaggelio! In his effort not to hurt anyone, he ends up getting hurt himself! It won’t take long before the village’s most harmless man becomes a great power.

Foto Mantouvala (Alexandra Pantelaki) - green/white

She has been serving the Tower for many years. Her qualifications? Serving under Pyrgodespoina’s orders, not fighting back Aristos’ insults and keeping the Tower’s secrets. But in her house she is in charge! Becoming a widow at a young age, she raised Zisis on her own and she drowned him in her love, out of fear of ending up alone. Her favourite activity? Bickering with Vaggelio, the woman who stole her Zisis.

Vaggelio Mantouvala (Danai Tagari) - cyan/white

Vaggelio is Zisis’ wife. Sweet, cunning and a bit lazy, she always finds a way to get out of the house chores and leave them to her mother in law! Zisis is her ally since she knows that he has a hard time refusing her wishes. The whole village has their attention focused on her belly, and awaits a pregnancy, while she has run out of excuses to use in order to leave her alone.

Elpida Soutsou (Anna Menenakou) - yellow

Dynamic journalist and single mother. She has never found the courage to reveal to her child who his father is. She hides in Koutsoupies to protect her family… There she will not only find the love of her life but also the chance to be again the great journalist that she once dreamed about.

Christos Soutsos (Manos Tsagkarakis) - green

Christos is seventeen years old and he is extremely angry for his age. The fact that he doesn’t know who his father is has become an excuse to get bullied at school. That’s something that he cannot forgive his mother about, who still hides his father’s identity. In Koutsoupies the two of them will try and come closer. Christos will be interested in Christina for the first moment.

Gerasimos (Makis) Alevizos (Antonis Karystinos) - cyan

A father of three girls, who until yesterday responded to family problems with “tell mum about it”. After his wife’s sudden death, he needs to learn from the start what it means to be a father. Makis comes to Koutsoupies with his three daughters, having decided to finally be by his children’s side. Life, though, has other plans for him… and gives him a second chance to love.

Christina Alevizou (Nasia Valkani) - white

Makis’ oldest daughter, who, after her mother’s death, was forced to grow up too quickly… Makis forces her to leave her boyfriend in Athens and their ridebikes. Christina holds her father responsible for everything and she doesn’t plan on forgiving him that easily about the moving.

Kyriakos Tsoukalas (Stathis Koikas) - yellow

Kyriakos was a failed football player and an ever more failed businessman, since he opened a sportswear shop without having any business acumen. He didn’t listen to Polina when he should have and now his family have found themselves in Koutsoupies trying to find a place to stay. Calm and well-intentioned, but with a strong ego, he doesn’t easily admit his faults.

Polina Tsoukala (Eirini Valatsou) - green

Polina comes to Koutsoupies with Kyriakos and their son, hunted by debts and a house eviction. Way more practical than her husband -and definitely more cunning- she is the one holding the family afloat and finding solutions even when these lead the family to trouble! Polina bites the bullet and goes on. Hardships do not bend her… In Koutsoupies she will understand that nothing is won the easy way.

Iliana Kasimati (Melina Lefantzi) - green

liana is the new teacher in Koutsoupies, but her ending up there was not by chance. Something from her past connects her deeply to that place and she is determined to find out the truth. Except that with her arrival comes also Sotirakis, a persistent admirer that has been following her around for a while and now she suddenly finds him again in her way.

Sotiris Kolovos (Nikolas Papaioannou) - white

Sotirakis is deeply in love with Iliana and is determined to prove his love in every way that he can. In Koutsoupies, he becomes her shadow, to the point of starting school again, just so he can spend more time with her. Will he quit when obstacles block his way or will he eventually win her heart?

Potoula Barbagianni (Polixeni Alexiou) - yellow

Potoula is Sotirakis’ aunt, she lives with Rina, being something between her maid, her friend and her family. She loves both Rina and Vlasis and she always tries to make them make up with one another, because she can’t stand to see them apart. Only behind her kindness and loyalty a secret love affair with someone from the village is hidden, one that no one must know about!

Zacharias Tsakanikas (Manos Kazamias) - cyan

Zacharias is a jack of all trades in Koutsoupies. He is the church chanter, the church official, the baker, the master of kolliva, and the gravedigger of the village. His political opinions change according to each president, as long as he is served. He wants progress but preferably, he wants it tied with older and religious people, who will fill the church first and the graveyard later, should everything work out.
